A massive massive congratulations to our Danielle Leedie Gray for winning Cultural Person of the Year, 2020 Ipswich Australia Day Awards Ceremony this week. (Along side Ash Barty no less for winning for Sport in the same community!)
In addition to her work as a commercial illustrator Danielle has volunteered her time to teach children in her community about Aboriginal Art and Culture, established an Aboriginal mothers group on Facebook and was awarded places in several fine art competitions.
Since joining The Illustration Room Danielle has worked on commissions with ARUP Group, Qantas Magazine, House & Garden Magazine and Gourmet Traveller Magazine, and she also created art work for ASX-listed company Veris’ Reconciliation Action Plan.
We are all incredibly excited for Danielle to be honoured with this award. Every commission we work on together she brings immense enthusiasm, indigineous art knowledge and unlimited creativity. Congratulations from the whole team at The Illustration Room Danielle.
“I grew up in Kingaroy with many family and life challenges that can often face indigenous youth including periods of time in foster care without contact with my parents. It was many years later when I started on a quest to learn everything I could about my family and our history that I became truly connected to myself and my culture and began giving back to the indigenous community through education, my time and art. This was the beginning of the artistic journey that now very much shapes my life. Through my art and my family research I am working to help other indigenous people who may have experienced the same uncertainty that I did.”
